SCGA News

Houndslake Country Club has long been a Member and a supporter of the South Carolina Golf Association and its initiaties. The SCGA, among many other things, provides all of us here at Houndslake with our handicaps.  The purpose of the SCGA is simply to promote the game of golf.  Jackie Seawell, a Member of the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, his wife Claire and I just attended the 7th Annual South Carolina Golf Day and it really was a wonderful affair.  The SCGA held their Annual Meeting and Larry Penley, Clemson University Golf Coach for the past 26 years, was the 58th inductee into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame.  The list of his accomplishments as a player and coach is too long to even begin.

The event this year was a very nice affair and next year’s event will be held at Columbia Country Club on Saturday, December 4th, 2010.  All Members of the Club with a handicap are also Members of the SCGA and as such are invited to S.C. Golf Day.  The charge (which includes dinner) is about $20 – very small amount for the event.  I will remind you as the date gets closer so that you will hopefully join Jackie, Claire and me for this meeting next year.  It is well worth the trip.

I am very proud to be on the Board of Directors of the SCGA as I have been for the past 10 or 12 years.  The South Carolina Golf Association’s Junior Program was voted by Golf Digest the NUMBER ONE (1) Junior Golf Program in the United States in 2008.  This Junior Program is very special to me because we have a couple of their Champions right here at Houndslake Country Club.  Mathew Nesmith won the SC Junior Four Ball Championship with partner Chandler Brazeal and Taylor Ann Dodson won the Tommy Cuthbert Junior All Star Championship with partner Brian Amick.  They have both had great years and Mathew is still going strong having won the Annual George Holiday Invitational this past Thanksgiving week-end.  Congratulations from all of us to these fine young Members of the Club.

Another note of interest about the South Carolina Junior Golf Association is the fact that we have ten (count them – TEN) golfers who are currently competing in the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying at Bear Lakes in South Florida.  Four of these players are also Members here at Houndslake – Kevin Kisner, Scott Brown, Alex Hamilton and Steven Poole.  There are also five players who participated in the SCJGA program who have won over $1,000,000 this year on the PGA Tour including three time tour winner Jonathan Byrd, two time winner D.J. Trahan and reigning U. S. Open Winner Lucas Glover.  How about the great state of South Carolina’s Golf Association?  Thank you to everyone who supports the SCGA and the SCJGA -- we appreciate it!  Quite a list of accomplishments for our Association and its programs!!
